Statistical Fiber Tracking on DT-MRI data as a Potential Tool for Morphological Brain Studies

چکیده
Introduction: The main potential of diffusion weighted MR imaging resides certainly in its capability to give information about nerve fiber tract orientation in the brain [1]. In order to isolate fiber tracts on a 3D tensor field, a specific algorithm is necessary. Deterministic as well as probabilistic approaches are possible. Modeling a nerve fiber tract as a smooth curve following the main directions of diffusion would be an example in the first case [2], whereas in the second case a stochastic process [3] is justified by the fact that the macroscopic description of water diffusion is done in probabilistic terms and the diffusion measured in a voxel is an average of many different sub-compartments. Here a combination of both approaches is implemented and is used to tackle a morphological question. By means of a statistical study we explore the divergence of the nerve fiber tracts radiating from different positions on the sagital midline of the corpus callosum into the hemispheres.

متن کاملFiber Tractography in Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Survey and Beyond
Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) is the first noninvasive in vivo imaging modality with the potential to generate fiber tract trajectories in soft fibrous tissues, such as the brain white matter. Several newly developed fiber reconstruction and tractography techniques based on DT-MRI are reviewed in this article, including streamline fiber tracking techniques, diffusion tens...

Visualizing the human brain using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) data has been a key technique to study the structure of the human brain and its connectivity. The challenge is to find a method that best exploits the data and serves as a model for visualization and connectivity analysis. This paper presents a novel method of visualizing the human brain structure with a mini...
متن کاملMuscle Pennation Measured with DT-MRI 1 Quantitative Diffusion Tensor MRI-Based Fiber Tracking of Human Skeletal Muscle
Diffusion-tensor MRI (DT-MRI) offers great potential for understanding structure-function relationships in human skeletal muscles. The purposes of this study were to demonstrate the feasibility of using in vivo human DT-MRI fiber tracking data for making pennation angle measurements and to test the hypothesis that heterogeneity in the orientation of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle’s aponeuros...
متن کاملMetrics for Uncertainty Analysis and Visualization of Diffusion Tensor Images
In this paper, we propose three metrics to quantify the differences between the results of diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) fiber tracking algorithms: the area between corresponding fibers of each bundle, the Earth Mover’s Distance (EMD) between two fiber bundle volumes, and the current distance between two fiber bundle volumes. We also discuss an interactive fiber track com...
